Our aim is …

To increase psychological knowledge and to upskill staff working with older people and their carers or older people themselves, to increase the health and emotional wellbeing of this client group and to prevent mental illhealth and longer term problems. There are workshops designed to suit older people or carers of those with dementia or staff working with these groups in the voluntary sector, care homes, social services and the mental health field. Some training courses are for adult mental health and learning disability specialists and all courses suit IAPT service providers wishing to involve more older people. You can purchase training for staff in your organisation, health promotional products, psychoeducational stalls and classes or educational talks for older people or carers of those with dementia based on cognitive behavioural therapy models and techniques to help recognise stress, anxiety and low mood and to put techniques in place to assist in alleviating these. These can be delivered anywhere in the UK. Please inform us of your organisation’s training needs. Individual Psychological Therapy is also provided for older people.

SEE OUR WORKSHOPS PAGE FOR DETAILS OF COURSES or enquire by email or phone. Both the Scottish and UK Governments are urging organisations prioritise preventative spending given the current economic climate. We provide  expert psychological training, consultancy and supervision for organisations including training for trainer’s courses for mental health staff. We also provide preventative, cognitive behavioural self-help classes and lectures for older people or carers to empower them to take control of their EMOTIONAL health and to decrease stress, providing choice in how people wish to work (see WORKSHOPS page on Looking After Yourself courses. These can be brought to your area). Our Foundations of GeroPsychology course in March 2012 is suitable for adult mental health specialists, as with an ageing population older people are likely to request your services. If you are an adult mental health specialist, upskilling will be important.

We have designed preventative, self-help lectures for Older Men- a notoriously hard to reach group which do not necessitate interaction and which focus on becoming more active to tackle the blues and low mood. There are also lectures with a  preventative aim for carers. The provision of psycheduction stalls can be provided in recognising stress, anxiety and depression. We are currently working on gauging the views of older people by consultation exercises and research and the design of products aimed at recognising common mental health problems in later life and using basic CBT techniques. See the order form on PRODUCTS page for examples. We provide bespoke Preventative, Psychological Interventions’ Training solutions for staff who work with older people in a variety of contexts and cover the United Kingdom at present but can travel wider if required. Looking after Yourself self- help, one day lectures for older people and carers are found under Workshops- Please complete booking forms for all training and classes. If you require bespoke preventative training/talks or health promotional products please enquire. Individual psychological therapy can also be provided for anxiety/depression/stress for older people or carers of those with dementia and people with dementia themselves. This includes the assessment and intervnetion in individual cases of behavioural problems in dementia. Dr Wilson has unique experience in the mental health field and at national government level in strategic planning and training delivery in psychological interventions including being the Psychologist author of the recent Scottish Government Promoting excellence framework for staff in health and social services working with people with dementia, their families and carers (2011). See LINKS page for document. Talks can be provided on policy drivers and the evidenece base for psychological interventions with older people and in the dementia field. Older people and those with dementia and their carers lag well behind adults of working age when it comes to equity of access to psychological interventions and therapies. Consider purchasing training or coming along to a course already organised and join in making change happen for a better quality of life for our older aged population. There is no health without mental health!
